PPR Domain 1: Competency 1- Human Development

 Competency 1- Human Development

  • The teacher understands human development processes and applies this knowledge to plan instruction and ongoing assessments that motivate students and are responsive to their developmental characteristics and needs.

What this means

Teachers understand the basic developmental needs of all students must be met before learning can take place. Human beings need to feel free from judgment and persecution. A classroom should be a safe harbor for students so the focus can be on learning. Students who feel connected to their classroom society are more capable and more driven to succeed. Quality teachers understand the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development of children and nurture student growth through developmentally appropriate practices.

Key terms to remember
  • Maslow's hierarchy of needs- five levels of needs that must be met to reach self-actualization. The needs are represented as a triangle with a base of physiological needs such as food, water, and shelter. It narrows slightly into safety, love/belonging, Esteem, and tops out at self-actualization. There are certain needs that are deficiency needs. These needs will motivate people to fill them.
  • Formal operational stage- the stage at which students can perform abstract thoughts without previously having experienced them.  People in this stage (11-adulthood) understand that others have different perspectives and beliefs, but assumes their own thoughts are correct. Complex thinking is possible and interest in adult thinking and worlds becomes increasingly prevalent. Identified by Jean Piaget.
  • identity achievement
  • Jean Piaget- studied educational psychology. noticed cognitive development transitioned at three ages during childhood (age 2, 7, and 11). Age 2-7 is preoperational, age 7-11 is concrete operational, and 11-adulthood is formal operational.
  • Zone of Proximal Development- developed by Lev Vygotsky. A learning place where a child can master a task if given appropriate help and support.  It is a transition between being able to accomplish a task with help and being able to accomplish a task independently.
Artifacts
         Artifact 1

    • Justification: Here, competency 1 was examined as individuals and as a group. Individual questions and ideas were captured collaboratively and examined. From there, individual reflection on human development was noted in response to some of the questions.
  • Artifact 2-

    • Justification: This is a video I reviewed while studying PPR 1. The video goes into great detail about the competency. It is an in-depth examination of the expectations and meaning behind the competency.
